Kentucky Black Trailblazers AR Experience

About the project

Geo-Located Volumetric Vignettes

By scanning QR codes placed at 19 different locations across Kentucky state, visitors can witness historical reenactments that showcase the stories of iconic figures like Civil Rights Leader Whitney M. Young, Jr., as well as the school teachers, business owners, writers, soldiers, abolitionists, and freedom seekers that shaped Kentucky history.

Made possible by an AARP grant, this first-of-its kind federally backed AR initiative was developed in collaboration with six Kentucky tourism agencies, alongside Tactic Studio.

"The potential of this medium to tell stories is boundless. But, in particular, this mix of augmented and mixed reality with live-action holographic video is a compelling example of the power of creative technology to invite new audiences to explore this important history."

The Process

Each vignette in this experience required detailed historical research along with the sourcing of period costume, accessories, and props. Almost all of the talent were cast as historical look-a-likes, with the final 3D performance allowing the audience to “hold space” with 19 trailblazing icons, hearing their words spoken aloud inside the churches, schoolhouses, and land on which the real people lived. The final assets were processed for lightweight deployment on mobile devices.
