The (Un)Known Project’s “Footprints Through Time” invites participants to scan QR codes at historical sites across Kentucky to better understand the legacy of racism in modern America through the eyes of Isaac — a curious young man who journeys alongside his best friend, Sam (the viewer). The experience takes an unexpected turn when they encounter the ancestral spirit of Isaac’s great-great-grandmother, Lula. Mama Lu shares stories about the resilience of enslaved people, transforming the environment around them. Spatial storytelling allows the audience to “hold space” with these holographic characters as they grapple with the complex and often painful history of America.
Human voices and stories lay at the heart of this project. Collimation approached Metastage with the goal of crafting life-like holographic conversations between a young man and the spirit of his ancestor, in a way that felt intimate and real, rather than gamified or uncanny. Live action production at Metastage ensured that this vision came true.
The project was developed in collaboration with notable organizations including the Bernheim Forest, Bridge Kids International, Frazier History Museum, Roots 101 African American Museum, and Bookman Cemetery, with contributions from 8th Wall and Arcturus.
The larger (Un)Known Project highlights the importance of community engagement in promoting a deeper understanding of Black History.
